Tributes for Lady McMahon at Derby Day
A rare mix of Australia's social elite and its exuberant punters have united to honour Lady Sonia McMahon at Derby Day at Randwick Racecourse.
'Sonia was the most beautiful woman and she was very charitable and she was very elegant, and I think she had a very large heart,' said fashion designer Jonathan Ward as Race 3, named in Lady McMahon's honour, commenced on Saturday.
Two of her children, Melinda and actor Julian McMahon, along with close friends such as Skye Leckie and Gai Waterhouse, and high-profile names including cricketer Michael Clarke, financier John Symond and designer Carla Zampatti lined up to cheer the gallopers in the Lady Sonia McMahon Memorial Stakes.
The widow of former prime minister William McMahon, a fashion trendsetter in her time and a keen racegoer, Lady McMahon had been preparing to attend the Autumn Racing Carnival before she died last last week in a Sydney hospital, aged 77.
'She was the same to everybody,' Ward said.
'I think there's a lot of people here today will really miss her, because there were a lot of people who expected to see her at the races today,' he said.
'I don't know what we are going to do without her,' Ward said.
Inside the glamorous David Jones marquee, model and actress Megan Gale paid tribute to Lady McMahon.
Wearing a black Willow dress, Gale oozed the type of daring fashion sense that Lady McMahon had been famous for.
'Her warmth and passion and energy will be missed by us greatly,' Gale said.
After the race, Julian McMahon celebrated quietly in the Emirates Marquee. With his sister Melinda present, he and the winning jockey aboard Renaissance had just accepted the trophy named in honour of his mother.
Michael Clarke, venturing back into the social spotlight for the first time since splitting from fiancee Lara Bingle, looked dashing in a Louis Vuitton black single-breasted suit.
The cricketer was dressed to the nines, but he looked slightly uneasy about being surrounded by media inside the marquee.
He told AAP that a sport star's image was important, especially when subjected to the kind of scrutiny endured by the likes of David Beckman, Tiger Woods and himself.
'I think everybody is different, but for me I've always cared about the way I look, the way I dress, and I take pride in that,' said Clarke.
'But I think everybody is different, and what I think is important about fashion and style is ... being true to yourself, what you feel comfortable in.'
>>Так что по сути своей, это был день ее памяти...
