:faint: :)

Harley
I'm here! I may have to hop up and leave suddenly because I have 2 sick kids who've been waking up all night, but maybe I'll get lucky!
MaryMae
Harley, welcome to this site. It's so delightful of you to stop by here, especially when it's so early for you! We all smile right now because of your warm and friendly gesture. We all here have a different level of English, that's why many questions have been prepared in advance. If you don't mind we will be asking them one by one more or less in the alphabetical order (according to the users' names). If you have some comments and questions, don't hesitate, whoever is ready, will answer.
natusya
Harley, welcome and good morning!
FunSB
Hi Harley!
AleNATci
Hi, Harley! We`d like to thank you for the creation of Mary`s character, for Mary and Mason`s love story which made a great impression on us. When Santa Barbara was on air in Russia, we all were schoolgirls or students. Now we have families and children of our own. Many years passed but we always kept this wonderful love story in our hearts. We DO NOT AGREE with that tragic and unjust end of Mary and Mason`s story. So we`ve found a way out of it. We are writing our own stories in the genre of "fan-fiction". In our stories Mary and Mason don`t lose each other, they go through many trials, but in the end they are always together and have a united family and wonderful children. Thank you very much! Уou and your Mary inspire us to create bright and kind things!
MaryMae
hope your kids will get well soon!
Harley
Wow! I have heard of fan fiction, but never experienced it up close!
Clair
Hi, Harley, my name is Sveta, I am from Vladivostok. I would like to ask you about your first experience of publishing a book. Was it difficult to find a publisher? Did you get any rejections? An author from Los Angeles works with me now at the same department of the University, he says it is very difficult to publish a book in the USA, you have to get a lot of rejections.
AleNATci
And now my question. Do You believe in such strong and deep love (as Mary and Mason had) in real life?
Harley
Yes, Sveta, it's true -- a lot of rejections. But I learned from acting that rejection is just a fact of life, nothing to get upset about. Of course, I would get very upset, but usually in a day or two I'm over the disappointment.
Clair
Ой, Алена, прости, я думала, ты уже вопрос задала. Прости
irisha
Good morning! It's so nice to see you here!Hope you'll enjoy our conversation))
Harley
Yes, I do absolutely believe in that kind of strong love that Mason and Mary experienced. I don't think everyone has it in this lifetime, but I think we all have moments of that and some people do live out great love stories.
chernec
Harley, Good day! Please accept my best wishes! And respect
Harley
I should add that even now, as a writer and as an actress, I still get rejected. It truly is part of life for an artist.
Julmers
Harley, hi! I’m Valentina)) Thank you for talking to us at such an early hour! I wanna ask some question. If you hadn't an actress and an author, what would you have liked to be
MaryMae
but you 're no rejected by your fans, who love you
Harley
Let's see: I suppose perhaps some kind of graphic artist. Such a difficult question! If I think of a better answer, I'll let you know
Harley
MaryMae, thank you!
irisha
You can not even imagine how many people admire and love you here)
MaryMae
not musician?
Harley
Ah, yes! Of course. Musician. My mom was a musician, so all my 7 siblings are musical, some professionally, and that too seems just part of life. So yes, I could imagine that.
natusya
I am Natasha. Harley, I just adore you and your Wollie! Can I ask? Does William Simon have something to do with a character of your book Simon Alexander or it's just a coincidence of names?
Harley
Natasha, that is sheer coincidence! I met William long after I created Simon. It's a nice coincidence, though.
irisha
Harley,I know you started your career in early youth. What inspired you to become an actress?
Harley
My mother was teaching at a college when I was 5 and they were doing a production of an opera, Dido and Aneas, and I was picked to be an angel in one scene (I had to simply stand over a dying man) and that so impressed me that I think my love for theater was born at that moment.
MaryMae
Harley, it's Paulina. In difficult situations and not only Wollie often thinks about Ruta, a woman who had suffered a lot in her life. Ruta's caracter a strongly influence the course of events and we really perceive her presence in the books. Is this a real caracter from your life? I hope I don't get too personnal.
irisha
oh ?impressive experience
Harley
Ruta is a combination, like most characters by most authors. She is partly my own "Jewish mother" -- actually, my sister Dory's mother-in-law, who befriended me when I was 13, and she is in part based on my friend Saul Rubinek's family story of escaping death in WWII by hiding under the floorboards of a house in Poland. Saul is a wonderful actor. And you can ask me anything!

MaryMae
Harley, you did play some of the angles in your life. You also were MAson's angle in Santa-Barbara
Harley
I was just thinking that as I was typing it!
irisha
)))
Clair
Harley, as you understood, we were crazy about Mason and Mary when we were teenagers, and we remember them now, what will your reaction be, if your children, being teenagers are fond of some fictional, movie, of series characters, as we were? Will you like it or not?
Harley
Oh, of course I will understand. Even now, as a grownup, I become obsessed by certain characters. Have you read the books of Philip Pullman, the Golden Compass, etc? I woke this morning thinking of those characters, which obsessed me for 3 months last year.
MaryMae
Philip Pullman, I don't know? is he a mystery writer?
Harley
Actually, his books are for young adults, but they are so imaginative and deep, I just love them. I think he is a genius.
Clair
I like your position! It was so hard to hear that you are abnormal because you love series characters
Julmers
About ahgel… (I played an angel at university too ))) Harley, I wonder why you returned to SB to play in a single episode of meeting in heaven.
Harley
Sometimes the characters we "interact" with our deep parts of ourselves, I suspect. But it's so pwerful. Fiction is nearly the most powerful thing I can think of.
kama
Hi, Harley! i am Kama.Mary and Mason had crazy beautiful love.Have you ever been in love like them?
Harley
Kama, I have often thought I was in love like that! And once, yes, with a man, who died, but we were not lovers, so it wasn't exactly like Mason and Mary.
Margo
Hello Harley! I'm Margo. First - my compliment - when I watched SB - I considered - You are the most beauiful women in the world. My question - Which Russian actors or actresses do you know and find talented?
Harley
Oh: why did I return for that single episode? They asked me to return and play a new character, because they were astonished at how upset the viewers were when I died. But I knew in my heart it was time to move on. But I wanted to come back for that one episode. Not just for Mason, but for the fans, too.
MaryMae
it's true. I felt that I had much in common with Mary. And I found a husbnand who has much in common with MAson (but less handsome :))
marusik
Hi, Harley, my name is Mariya. I like your Mary. Harley, what character whom you`d played looks like you?
AleNATci
Harley, In your opinion, could Mary and Mason have ever separated if Mary stayed alive or would they have kept their relationships?
AleNATci
простите нечаяянно нажала
Harley
I think Mason and Mary, of my imagination, would not have separated. HOwever, in soap writing, lovers must separate and undergo severe conflict, or the viewers get bored with them!
Harley
I am sorry to say that we in America see few Russian films! Name some mainstream actors that do Hollywood movies -- I can't think of any, perhaps because I have little kids and rarely go to the movies now. But I used to, all the time!
MaryMae
udst before Maiya will answer! Harley, do you depict your friends in your books? If do, do they recognize themselves and how do they react? If I'm not wrong, you said once, that your friend Mindy was sort of Wollie's counterpart? I also think that Wollie have something from you. I also find some similarities between Joye and you? Am I completely wrong?
irisha
I agree with you,Dobsons must got as many emotions from viewers as possible,ratins...
Harley
Mariya, do you mean which character is the most like me? Wow -- that's a hard one. I'll have to think about that. I suppose, for an actress, every character is some aspect of ourselves and "feels" like us after awhile. Even the bad ones.
irisha
What is your favorite role and why?
Harley
Yes, MaryMae, exactly. My friends are everywhere in my books, but for instance, Fredreeq is half my friend Tanya and half my friend Tara, from different eras of my life. Joey is mostly me. Wollie is my friend Mindy, and also me.
MaryMae
I'm glad I've recognized you :)))
Harley
I think my favorite was Maggie from CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF because she was so much fun to play, and so ruthless and so positive that she could make life happen just as she wanted. ANd she wanted a baby! Just at the same time that I wanted a baby. ANd nothing stopped her.
MaryMae
Now yuo have three kids. It's marvelous!
Harley
I also loved playing Billie Dawn in BORN YESTERDAY. THese were stage roles -- don't try to go find me playing them on film!
AleNATci
Harley, it`s not a question, but a request. Could you send us your photo with autograph, please? (maybe write one autograph on a photo, scan it and send on e-mail to one of us, so we all could copy) Is it possible?
Clair

FunSB
Hi, Harley! I'm Sveta)) why did you decide to write detective stories?
Harley
Yes, I have a 9-year old daughter (whose stomach hurts at the moment) and twin 7-year olds. My little boy has a bad cold and ended up sleeping with me last night, and I was crunched between him and my dog and couldn't move!
Julmers
lol Harley, thanks for your care to your fans in SB and books!!! Why did you call your character Wollie? Her ideas about "male" female names at the beginning of the book are very funny
Harley
If you send me your addresses (on my e-mail ************) I will send you all real photos with autographs. It will take longer, but be better quality!
irisha
It will be great!!!
AleNATci
thank You very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MaryMae
^paarently, you ddin't get much sleep this night. Hopefully you will catch up with a nap
Harley
2 answers: I wrote detective books because that's what I most love reading and I named her Wollie because it just came to me one day. A lot of ideas just do that, have you noticed? And you can't recall how they entered your head? I loved Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN and that inspired me too
MaryMae
I type like a dolt
Harley
I love to nap -- it is my absolute favorite hobby. I'm hoping the kids are all well enough to go to school, or I won't get a chance to, though.
kama
« Santa-Barbara» was showed not only in Russia but also in republics of the former Soviet Union. Do you want to travel around the world and visit Russia, Azerbaijan?
Harley
Yes, Kama, yes! In my 4th book I created characters from the countries in those areas. I'm very, very eager to visit there. My family was from Slovakia, 2 generations ago.
Margo
Harley, what love story (literary or cinematographic) has impressed you most of all?
marusik
пас
FunSB
Do you know at the begining who will be the killer in your book?
Julmers
it's lovely hobby ))
Harley
Oh, so many. As a teenager I loved WUTHERING HEIGHTS. Now I go for more happy relationships. Nick and Nora Charles in THE THIN MAN come to mind. All the books of a romance writer from the 1930's named Georgette Heyer -- so funny and so wise and romantic. I'm sure I'll think of many more as I go along.
Lucy
Hi, Harley! What principles of your children` upbringing do you have?
Harley
Often I know who the killer is before I know anything else about the book, and sometimes I don't know until I'm nearly at the end. DEAD EX, my 3rd book, was like that. I really wasn't sure. In my 2nd book I knew from the moment I wrote the words "Chapter One" . . .
irisha
When did you realize that passion for literature was much stronger then acting?
Harley
Oh. Lucy, good question. Some days I'm just happy we're all safe and no broken bones and everyone is reasonably kind to one another and no one goes to bed mad. But I guess my feeling is, my children were just "loaned" to me by God and my job is to love them, whoever they are, and give them the message that they are wonderful beings. And beyond that, to help them develop enough skills to get through life.
MaryMae
Your kids are lucky with their Mom.
natusya
Does it often happen to you to find yourself in an amusing and a funny situation? Probably, some stories described in your books are the real events happened to you?
Harley
Irisha, it was when I started taking writing classes, and although I was still acting a lot, I slowly realized that my favorite time of the week was that class, and writing the assignments, and that I was growing more and more interested in my characters in my stories. At that same time, for some reason, the acting parts just weren't as exciting. It was as if all signs were pointing to a career change for me. Still, it was a big surprise!
Harley
Yes, I just have that kind of perspective that finds humor in situations. But also, and I'm not sure why this is, I DO find myself in funny situations. Perhaps I have a certain sense of adventure or a willingness to do peculiar things and befriend a lot of people, but yes. I do seem to have a fairly funny life. ANd my children are funny. Their dad is funny too, although when we were splitting up, I didn't find him very funny. But now we're friends again.
irisha
It is so good to discover the other side of yourself...
Clair
Is it possible to learn how to write attending writing classes?Or is it a matter of experience and hard work?
Clair
Actually, I did attend writing classes and I enjoyed them a lot but I did I just for fun
Harley
Of course, it's not necessary to take classes, but they really do help, if the teacher is gifted. Oh! My daughter is calling my name! I'll try to get back but if I don't, I'm so sorry!
Lucy
What is the value of the relations between Mary and Mason?
MaryMae
подождем. У нее больной ребенок, вот зовет ее
Clair
англоязычный народ, ну как все читать успеваете? Лично я потом еще внимательней прочту.
marusik
читать - да, но риентироватсья по ситуации как совсем англоязычные - проблема)))
FunSB
успеваем)))))))))
MaryMae
Мы заархивируем чат и потом переведем для тех, кто не все понял
Margo
Читать успеваем, а вот понимать - не все сразу :О)
FunSB
я могу сделать архив после чата
MaryMae
Света, классно. Спасибо
irisha
классно,будет здорово еще раз пересмотреть
FunSB
договорились))
chernec
сделать архив - мысль! Спасибо
Julmers
читаю через раз, а сориентироваться не могу так быстро. Тем у Харли ого-го!
irisha
потом материал пригодится
chernec
а то я твообще три слова из ста понимаю
irisha
для дальнейших бесед в первую очередь
Julmers
какая все-таки она молодец! замечательный человек!
MaryMae
Сколько ждем, миут 10? Вдруг дочка не отпустит?
FunSB

irisha
при любых ракладах ждем,я думаю она даже если больше не сможет обязательно попрощается
MaryMae
Молодец, конечноЮ про фотки все поняли? Она предпочитаетс по почте вслать? разорится ведь, бедняга, на нас
AleNATci

FunSB

irisha
безумно приятная беседа
Julmers
может какие вопросы если не успели задать напишем через MaryMae на почту. тем более она фотки с афтографами пообещала
kama
Девочки, класс! Спасибо вам!
Harley
okay, I'm back!
natusya
In the film "Red queen" you played a murderer. Who did you kill there (on-screen) if it's not a secret?
Julmers
фотки через обычную почту???????
MaryMae
Is she better?
FunSB
Welcome back, Harley!
Harley
My daughter is curled up on the sofa across the room now. Let's see: THE RED QUEEN -- I played an assassin, so I killed a couple of people. I was a professional.
Lucy
Lucy: What is the value of the relations between Mary and Mason?
MaryMae
Poor creature. Stomach pains are horrible
Harley
The value? Do you mean, why is love important, the kind of love that Mason and Mary had? ONe thing is that Mason was a better person for having known Mary and Mary was a much braver person because Mason encouraged her to push past all her nun-like ways.
MaryMae
When you finished your first novel, did you already know that there was going to be a next one? Was it hard to separate Wollie from the Doc? Did you feel obliged to do so ? I liked Doc.
Harley
Not that I have anything against nuns!
Harley
Yes, my daughter doe NOT like 4th grade, and sometimes I think that gives her stomach pains. Unless she's allergic to something that I don't know about.
natusya
Harley, is it true that you have Slav origins?

Irisha
Can you feel you European roots or you totally American?
Harley
Oh, I liked Doc too! No, I wrote that novel thinking that that was the end, that Wollie and Doc would be together forever. My editor wanted a sequel and wanted Wollie to date again, so I knew that her perfect love story with Doc would have to unravel, because otherwise, how would she be dating?
MaryMae
yuo cannot, if you were raised by them catholics:))). Actually my husband was raised by the Jesuists and he became an atheist
Harley
Yes, okay. I do find nuns scary. And i WAS raised Catholic.
Julmers
Didn't you think about visiting Russia? You shouldn't be afraid, there are no bears in the street here. And we are love you))
Harley
I just love Europe and wish that I could live there for a year or two. Paris and Rome are my favorite cities, so far. But I haven't traveled enough to know if there are other cities I'd like even more. My grandfather came over from SLovakia, on my dad's side. My mom's grandparents came from NOrway and Sweden.
Clair
Does your editor tell you what you must write? If you do not obey, won't you be published?
Harley
Perhaps there are no bears in the streets of Russian, but what about nuns?
Clair
are you afraid of nuns?
MaryMae
Harley, come to PAris again and then to Russia, Ukaraine and other countires. MAybe you could organise a workshop.
MaryMae
We're not catholic :)))
Lucy
In your opinon, did Mason regain the emotional balance after Mary's death and if yes, when and with whom?
irisha
)))it is quite safe on the nuns side
Harley
My editor is lovely. But she has a strong sense of what she likes. She makes suggestions and it's easy to use my imagination and make them work. If I didn't agree, I'd probably discuss it with her, but if our values and tastes were too far apart, we wouldn't be a good match. Just as in romance!
Julmers
about nuns... to be or not to be)) ?
MaryMae
it's our dependacy from editors, bossess and the like. we have live with this
Harley
I bet bunches of nuns visit Russia, though!
MaryMae
they change clothes
Harley
Okay, this is difficult to admit to you, but I didn't watch SB after I left, because here in America it's on in the afternoon, and I was never home in the afternoon, and I was so busy pursuing my film career at that point. Also, I think I was sad to think their lives went on without Mary.
Clair
Neither did we!
MaryMae
we too
Harley
Ah, nuns in disguise. How diabolical!
MaryMae
In the Red queen, you did something like this?
Harley
You're kidding! You stopped watching?
Clair
As for me, I could not watch the crazy person Mason became after you had left.
MaryMae
an undercover nun?
FunSB
Yes! It is true!!!! We stop watching it after Mary's death
MaryMae
I did and many of us
Harley
MaryMae, I had totally forgotten that. Yes, I DID do something like that. Disguised nun. How could I forget? I also played a character playing a nun as a disguise in GUIDING LIGHT, another soap. Did you guys see GUIDING LIGHT in Russia?
natusya
What actress could play Wollie?
FunSB
unfortunately we didn't watch it
irisha
do you have favourite soup opera or you don't watch it at all?
Harley
I had no idea. Poor Mason. Poor fans! By the way, he is still my friend. We e-mail on occasion, and he advised me on directing for a short story I wrote about a director.
MaryMae
The only serie I watched in my lefe was SB. I don't know if the Guiding light was on in Russia
Julmers
and now some of us read your books ))
Clair
Yes, I stopped! I was astonished at Mary's death. And I didn't like Mason after Mary's death at all! He became an subnormal
FunSB
it wasn't on in Russia
MaryMae
So yoo switch to a new craft?
irisha
here it is very difficult to find books, film, only by means of internet we can start to know more about so many thibgs
Harley
As for who could play Wollie, I'd say anyone really talented who's between 20 and 40. Honestly, as long as she loved Wollie and had a great sense of humor, it would work. Even if she were short. I think Sandra Bullock, who looks nothing like Wollie, would be great. Or Uma Thurman. Or anyone younger, the generation I haven't kept up with because the only movies and tv I watch these days are kids' stuff.
Julmers
uma thurman! ))) yes! To your respond about Wollie: Yes, it is the way we write our fan fics )) Do you have any extremal hobbies (except nap))), such as skydiving (lol)?
MaryMae
Speaking about Lane Davies, a small wink form him, as in commentaries to the chronicals on his site he wrote the followng : "Harley was a joy to work with from the beginning. "
Harley
I've been so consumed with motherhood (I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about) that I've lost touch with Hollywood a bit. But I feel that I'm about to get back into my professional life as my kids get older and don't need me round the clock. (except for right now, when 2/3 of them are sick.)
natusya
Is climbing on the roof and fixing outside lights a natural matter for you?
Harley
I felt just the same about Lane. My best friend died during the year I was on Santa Barbara, and it was very slow and painful to watch and Lane helped me through it in a very deep way. A true friend.
Lucy
What was your favorite storylines in Mary and Mason stuff and the one you would have liked to change or withdraw?
Harley
I have no talent at all for climbing on roofs and hanging lights! But I do happen to love Christmas decorations and will on occasion risk my life for them.
MaryMae
I think Natasha makes a hint exactly about this.
MaryMae
Among TLC community there is someone who calls hiself "Doc in CA". Don't you know if he took this name after the main caracter from "Dating Dead Man"?
Harley
Oh, my GOd. I can't remember the storylines well enough. I remember riding a horse on the beach with him, which I loved. Mostly, it all runs together in my head. Remember, this was 25 years ago that I was on the show, and I never saw it since. In fact, soap actors rarely watch the show themselves. WE have no idea what's going on with the other characters half the time. The work hours are so long, the last thing we want to do when we go home is watch the show.
irisha
SB appeared here in difficult times and had huge impact on so many people it was the light...it was the first soap,we couldn't even imagine to see this, everything was so new to us,costumes,hair,makeup...
Julmers
Harley, do you believe at a miracles?
Harley
Even in America, SB was unusual, but I can't imagine it being the only soap you saw -- truly, what an impact that would be!
Harley
Do you know, I never thought about Doc in LA being my DOc!@
natusya
Were there any particular reasons for the choice of your eldest daughter name Audrey? This very beautiful name.
MaryMae
After this one, I didn't want to watch anything else. I was so impressed. It was enough
Harley
I absolutely positively believe in miracles. And on that note, I must go!
MaryMae
maybe he did :)))
FunSB
Thanl you bery much fot talking with us! :flower
Clair
Harley, Thank a lot for such a wonderful talking!
MaryMae
Once you said that you'were an unassuming person. I would add that you're a lovely preson and it was very very nice of you to chat with us. Thank you
AleNATci
Harley, we were so glad to know You as a person and talk to You! It was really pleasure! Thank you very much!!! We are hope to see You again some time!
Harley
We just loved the name Audrey. And if you ever saw her, she is just beautiful. Almost black hair, brown eyes, nothing like me. SO beautiful. My twins too
natusya
Harley, thank you! You are the BEST! We love you and we will miss you.
Julmers
Harley! Thank you so much
irisha
we so grateful for talking to us!!!

Harley
Thank you all SO MUCH! It was a delight to talk to you. now I must go pack lunches and wake the children and get them ready for school. I hope they're all well enough to go, or I won't get any writing done today!
Lucy
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
marusik
Harley! Thank you!!!
MaryMae
Take a good nap. Thank you again
Julmers
It was a miracle! :)
FunSB
Have a good day, Harley!
MaryMae

Почему она спросила про монахинь, смысл не понятен :(

Просветите, кто может
А вообще, какая она молодец, всю ночь между больными детьми металась, встала в такую рань чтобы с нами поговорить, да еще так подробно на все вопросы ответила!
