Iwan Rheon at the Laurence Olivier Awards in London last March.
After beating Sheila Hancock and Maureen Lipman to a best supporting actor Olivier award in March for his breakthrough role in Spring Awakening and starring in E4's hit superhero drama Misfits, Welsh actor Iwan Rheon is now taking on the role of Hugh in John Osborne's The Devil Inside Him for the National Theatre Wales.
Can you tell us a little about the play?
It's the first play that Osborne wrote, when he was only 18, and it's recently been discovered. It's about a boy searching for freedom in a repressed society in a small Welsh village. His parents don't really love him and there's no communication in the house so his only outlet is writing.
You seem to have a leaning to troubled characters – are you an "angry young man"?
I think we've all got a bit of rage in us! Moritz [in Spring Awakening] was struggling with growing up and Simon [from Misfits] struggles to communicate with people and feels like he's not being listened to and I can relate to that. You can see some of Osborne's frustrations about being a young man in the character of Hugh, but no, I don't think I'm that angry.
Are you excited about being a part of the National Theatre Wales?
Absolutely. I wanted to be a part of it as soon as I heard it was being set up. I think it's really important for young people in Wales. Although there's a whole world out there of theatre, film and television, it's still great to know there's something in Wales.
Spring Awakening ruffled a few feathers because of its portrayal of adolescent sexuality; what did you make of that?
I think it's good to have a bit of controversy and to try to push things forward, especially in musical theatre, which is often very safe. It brought young people to the theatre, which was fantastic.
What do you do apart from acting?
I play and write songs. I do solo stuff that has a more acoustic vibe, but I play with a band as well, which is more soul-rock. I'm just doing it for fun at the minute; it's quite a personal thing, but if something comes of it, then great.
